How to choose a great pair of running shoes

You can run in your comfy sweats or t-shirts and shorts, but when it comes to shoes, go for the best. Your running shoes are all the gear you need. They protect your feet, legs and knees from injury. If you don't replace them when they are worn out (even if externally they look okay, the cushioning layer within could be worn out) you may face problems with your knees. If the soles are gone, you could easily slip and fall. shoes protect your feet and knees and legs from injury.

The act of running involves your feet pounding the ground with a force equal to three times your body weight for each step you take. Your foot automatically rolls in from outside to inside to absorb and disperse the force so that you do not get injured. If your foot rolls in too much (overpronate), you are more likely to get knee problems. If your foot does not roll in enough (underpronate), the impact with each step stresses the outside of your leg.

Which type of shoe you should get depends on whether you tend to overpronate or underpronate.

If you have a high-arched foot, you are likely to overpronate. If you have flat feet, you tend to underpronate. To find out which you are, do the footprint test.

    Wet your feet.
  1. Step on a dry piece of pape
  2. If your footprint is such that the arch in the center is so extreme, your footprint is nearly cut in half, or if you don't even see the strip connecting the top and bottom half of the foot, you are probably an underpronator. If the arch in the center of the foot is slight, you are probably an overpronator. Anything in between means you have a normal stride.
